ABOUT ME
Meet Vermanno Bowman

I grew up in rural Orangeburg, SC with seven siblings and often moved from house to house living with family members. Due to my mother being young and making minimum wage working at Taco Bell. While my father worked long night shifts at a manufacturing plant called Allied Air just to ensure me and my brother were taken care of. Eventually, my mom and my stepfather saved up enough money to rent a home of our own in a trailer park. Even though some nights my mother would have to scrap together pocket change or make small meals just to ensure me and my siblings ate, we were still blessed to have a roof over our heads. While sometimes I would cry for the simple fact that even though my siblings ate that she would not be able to eat because there was not enough food, or she did not have enough money on her ebt (SNAP) card to buy more groceries. As time went on, we ended up moving to Charlotte, NC in June 2012 for better opportunities and a better life.
On November 4, 2012, my mom made me stay up and watch the presidential election results come in on CNN. At the time I did not know what the electoral college was or even how voting took place. But when President Obama won and said in his victory speech that “ It does not matter who you are, or where you come from or what you look like or where you love It does not matter whether you are Black or white, or Hispanic, Asian, or Native American, young, old, rich, or poor, able, disabled gay or straight you can make it here in America if you are willing to try “(Obama, 2012). At that moment I knew politics was something that I wanted to pursue. Just for the simple fact that I want to be the change that I wanted to be in the world and to improve the lives of others so no parent or child would have to deal with the obstacles I faced growing up.

Early on, I became a organizer working with Rally NC on the UNCC campus to mobilize voters and advance progressive change across North Carolina. My dedication to civic engagement led me to serve on the State Executive Committee (SEC) of the North Carolina Democratic Party, where I worked to strengthen grassroots organizing and amplify everyday voices in state politics. In 2022, I ran as a first-time candidate challenging former State Representative Kelly Alexander in the Democratic primary. Despite being a newcomer, I won 17% of the vote, proving that Charlotte voters are ready for fresh leadership and bold ideas that prioritize people over entrenched interests.

In 2024, I was the only candidate to challenge State Representative Carla Cunningham, highlighting her record of voting with Republicans over 80% of the time during the 2023–2024 legislative session, joining Republicans in overriding multiple vetoes from Governor Roy Cooper, and missing 332 votes (43%) in the 2021–2022 session. I ran to give voters a real choice and to hold elected officials accountable to the communities they serve. My commitment to justice extends to the environment. After the 2014 Duke Energy coal ash spills, I spoke out about the impacts on working- and middle-class families, holding the company accountable for environmental damage and unsafe practices. I have consistently challenged Duke Energy’s efforts to build new gas-powered plants and roll back carbon reduction goals, advocating for clean energy solutions at public hearings and alongside other climate organizations like Climate Action NC.

I am also a proud veteran, serving in the North Carolina Army National Guard as a Military Police officer. My service has taken me to critical domestic missions, including when Governor Roy Cooper activated my unit in response to the January 6 Capitol riots, ensuring public safety during a moment of national crisis. My military experience has strengthened my leadership, accountability, and resilience under pressure. Every step of my journey, from organizing to state politics, environmental advocacy, and military service has prepared me to fight for Charlotte families. I am running to ensure that every resident has access to safe housing, quality education, fair wages, a clean environment, and a justice system that works for all. I bring real-world experience, courage, and a proven record of standing up for working and middle class families that has been left behind by career politicans who serve at the best interests of all Wall Street and Corporate America then the citizens who elected them into office in the first place.
